Is bleeding on the 6th day normal after a tongue piercing?

  • I got my tongue pierced last Thursday night. It's been swollen but I've been taking good care of it and have had no problems until now. The past two days I've been able to eat solid food. About a half hour ago I tasted blood in my mouth. When I went to the washroom, I realized my piercing was bleeding. I washed my mouth out a few times and after about 10 minutes it seemed to have stopped. Is that normal? I've been trying my best to not play with the bar or anything. Could it be because prior to the bleeding I had a few sips of coke (I thought it would be okay - maybe not?). I also could not wash my mouth out after I ate lunch today as I'm at school - could that be a contributing factor? I plan on rinsing my mouth out as soon as I get home with salt water or mouthwash, but that is unfortunately not for a few hours. I just want to make sure that the bleeding is not a serious problem, even though it's stopped now.

    You are going to want to use sea salt and warm water. Bleeding is normal. Tongue piercings heal very fast. Just take good care of it. Suck on ice to help it calm down.

A small amount of bleeding is normal. Just keep up with the 3x per day warm salt water rinses (1 cup warm water to 1/4 tsp. salt) and avoid mouthwash, hydrogen peroxide, smoking, playing with the bar too much, alcohol, tongue kissing, oral sex, and overcleaning. Your piercing might be irritated if you're using iodized salt. Most table salt has iodine added, but it can irritate a piercing. Use non-iodized salt (sea salt) and it may help the healing process.
