How can you tell if a peircing is infected?

How do i know my belly button peircing is infected ?

  • okay so like me and my friend both went to get our belly button peircings like about a week ago and the lady just gave us an ointment and told us to clean it twice and put the ointment on there but my friends belly button peircing is very red and she says that when she squeezes it white discharge comes out . ive been using the exact same ointment but my peircing is just slightly red . how do you tell that her peircing is infected ? and if it if what can she do to cure it ?

    only put the ointment on at night and clean it with warm salt water when you wake up and before you got to bed and it should begin to heal fine but try not and touch it your hands carry a bunch of germs and bacteria

Well number 1 she shouldn't be squeezing it or even touching it at all the week after getting it done. That's not helping it! A piercing being red is completely normal. It can also be a bit hard around the area, sometimes a small blister may appear and a bit of crusting may appear after another while and all these are actually normal. The only major things to be concerned about is if the piercing is actually hurting while it's in meaning that the skin around it has swollen and it's tight. If a lot of puss comes out of it it may be an infection but cleaning it with slat and warm water should clear a small infection up anyway. I'm not sure what ointment you were given to use but when I got mine done and all my others I was told never to use anything other than salt and water for the first few weeks. Overall I wouldn't be worried if I were you. As for you friend tell her to not touch it and keep cleaning it as much as possible.

If there is anything coming out of the piercing, especially white puss, it is infected. Soak it once or twice daily with a saline solution of uniodized salt and water an a cup over the piercing.
