In California, how old do you have be to get a tattoo with parental consent?

  • Im 15, and I want to get a tattoo in my 16th birthday. I want a tattoo of a jigsaw piece, like in the Saw movies. I have been a big fan since the first movie and have seen almost every one in theaters. And about at the third movie I wanted to get a jigsaw piece tattoo on my leg, or on my ankle, or foot. I have asked my mom, and she says she doesnt want me to get one at such a young age but she knows I have wanted one for a long time and that it isnt just a tattoo with no meaning to it. She knows that I will get it someday, like in a couple years. But how old do you have to be with parental consent? I have asked a really nice tattoo shop and they said 18, but that was a really nice place...

    I lived in Cali. for 18 yrs. and you leagally have to be 18 no exceptions. if not they can be sued.

I don't know in CA but most places will let you get one (with parental consent) at about 16. It's the same with piercings as well.

Recognize the last sentence of your question there "I asked a really nice tattoo shop and they said 18, but that was a really nice place..." Tattoos are A. Permanent and B. Wounds. Given those requirements do you want a tattoo studio that isn't a 'really nice place?' I want a place that takes their art seriously and part of taking their art seriously is increasing the perception of their art by doing things like always maintaining utmost cleanliness and not tattooing minors. Simple as that. As I always say, if you're a minor who finds someone willing to give you a tattoo you've found someone who should never tattoo anyone.
