Can a tattoo shop legally change a tattoo price?
-
I went in to get a quote on a tattoo that i wanted and was told by an artist at the shop that my tattoo would cost about $400. I decided this was a good cost and left a $20 deposit. When i came in for my first session i paid $100 and got the outline done. A month later i called to get some color added by the artist but was told that she had been fired. I was then asked to come in so that they can take a look at my tattoo so that a new artist can take over. When i went in, the shop owner said i was not given the right price and my tattoo would cost $300 instead of $400 (so i was excited, that was a $100 reduction). That day i left a 40 dollar deposit and agreed with the artist on a thicker outline and the color of the tattoo, after that i left the shop and went home. When i came in for my 2nd session (color) the artist took almost 3 hrs to tattoo one flower and make a thicker outline on just 1/3 of my tattoo. Since i was running short on time i had to leave early so he didn't finish coloring the vine of leaf in that area. A couple days later i call the artist and ask him when could I come in for more color. He then asked me how much money I could bring in. At this point i was very confused and told him that i was told the cost of my tattoo would be $300 and that i was never told i would be charged per session. Each session (about 3 hours each) will cost me around $200, therefore the price of my tattoo will not be $300, but rather $700. In addition, the quote that the first artist gave me (who did my outline) was fired because of various reasons, but one of the main reasons was that she was giving incorrect quotes to customers. My question is: Is the tattoo shop legally able to change the price on me like this?

Answer:
Most tattoo parlors charge by the hour, and they also have to charge you each time for a new needle. As for legally being able to change the price, well since you were only given a verbal estimate then they can change the price as often as they like. Next time I would suggest getting the estimate in writing then you have something that you can refer back to.

Unfortunately this can be a tricky situation. Especially with the girl getting fired. Usually when you fill out your initial paperwork, they write down a description of the tattoo and price. I always make sure that before I start on a large tattoo, we agree on a price per session. Each individual artist is kind of their own little business. They can turn away work, and usually charge what they feel is worth for their style/technique. So, I guess the good news is that you're tattoo is probably going to turn out much better in the end, even if you have to pay a little more for it now.
the answer is YES, An Artist can charge as much or as little as they think they are worth. You are buying a piece of ART Since it is common to charge by the hour, and COLOR WILL ALWAYS cost more that just black, then add in more if you have shading! You changed to color, and redid your outline. And only $200 for 3 hours is good, at least for where I live.
