How Hard is it To Get a Job With a Tattoo?
-
I'm currently 16 and will soon be leaving high school to go to college. I'm getting a tattoo of the welsh dragon on my inner forearm. I've been doing research on how hard it is to get a job with a tattoo. Most people say as long as you keep it covered you should be fine. I am trying to find a part time job right now, but it is hard because of the economy. If i have an interview with an employer it is easy enough to cover the tattoo because i will be wearing a dress shirt. If i do get the job, and it requires me to wear a uniform with short sleeves, then i can wear a long sleeve t-shirt under the uniform shirt. There is some way to bypass it, so i can cover the tattoo when i get it. A major thing that I am worried about is when i go into my career. I am looking into being an architect, graphic designer, web designer, web developer, or some wort of job in IT. I know that most of those jobs are just sitting down, and my tattoo can easily be covered. In the long run, if the tattoo can be concealed, is it worth it to get it?

Answer:
Not all jobs will allow a long sleeve shirt to be worn under the short sleeve shirt as it may be a safety hazard or just against dress code, you can't assume that you will be able to wear long sleeves, it will depend on each job. Not all jobs have the same rules and expectations. As for long term future jobs, the same thing applies, you have no real way of knowing. In my field, as a general rule I can have no visible tattoos or piercings, but some hospitals and medical offices are more lenient and allow them. In some jobs I can wear long sleeves or a lab jacket, and in some I can't.

I regret my tattoo as I am a naval officer and it looks silly now that I am older. But it is your decision and your body. Just remember, the decisions you make today, affect the consequences of tommorow. Good luck son.
If the town you live in has two million plus people, you'll find it really isn't a problem like it has been in years past. If it were twenty years ago, it might be. But in the cities, many places have done away with the 'no visible tattoos' policy. Thirty-eight percent of adults aged eighteen to thirty-five have at least one tattoo. Tattoos are as commonplace in the cities as anything else you can name. The idea that you can't get a job because you have ink is dying fast. All you have to do is have ambition, and a willingness to work, and you are in. This was not as true before Miami and LA Ink, which helped the industry a great deal. These shows made the popularity of getting inked skyrocket. You can always find a job if you're willing to work. Most of the cashiers that work at one of our local grocery retailers work there because they did away with their no visible tattoo policy. Now everyone with ink there work like demons, because they also incorporated a profit-sharing system. It was really a smart move on their part. If you are sixteen now, the issue will probably be history by the time you're ready for a career move. Don't sweat it.
