Is runners knee permanent?

I have knee pain for about one year, my doctor says its runners knee, but i disagree.?

  • im a teenage girl with pain right below my knee cap that goes up to my medial condyle. And my medial condyle hurts to touch. I also have pain near my fibula, first i thought was shin splints but seems to be connected more with my fibula. with mild swelling under my kneecap and inner knee. what could this be? (i didn't have any tramatic injury)

  • Answer:

you are a teenager, perhaps see a physiotherapist or sports injury specialist (even if you don't think its sports injury), have this checked out as knees are important to look after for long term, and a small injury untreated for years can get worse and worse.

An orthopedic doctor is one that usually is best to start with for this type of complaint. I'd suspect though that running every day has worn some on that joint/area. It is not the best to put your body weight on the knees in a daily run. Over time that breaks down due to that focused of use on it. I would say jogging is just worse than running as you are pounding body weight on that area , literally. I have a sister that works in an operating room and said the majority of knee surgeries they do are related to jogging in the patients they get for surgery on that area or do knee replacements. I would guess if you continue to run daily you will have the pain worsen, and have trouble walking. I'd take it easy , reduce the running to brisk walking for now and let this area mend. Don't do the activity daily but maybe every other day to let the joint/area rest in between. Sit for periods of time to let the knee rest and keep the feet elevated so not to put any pressure on there. I would also apply an ice pack to the swollen area and if you need to, try some anti inflammatory such as ibuprofen. I must say , for a teenager you have learned your medical terms well, if that interests you try looking into the medical field as a career choice when older and out of high school, that's always in demand.

What type of doctor did you see? I would go to a Sports medicine center, who specialize in these types of injuries/ailments, and be assessed. Perhaps an MRI/ or x-rays would help diagnose what may be going on. You can get bursitis in the kneecap, which causes swelling. There is alot of info about this on-line--just google it. here's one article; http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-some-common-kneecap-injuries.htm

Knee pain can come from things you do with them when you are not running. If you sit with your knee tucked under or behind you could be one cause. Make sure when you run and walk, your feet are pointing forward and not in or out.
