How do you treat bone spurs?

Want to get rid of these bone spurs!!!?

  • right well i'm 16 and close to crying at the though of having risky and long recovery surgery for these stupid heel spurs! I have developed Haglund's at the back of both heels which is basically a large bone spur due to not walking correctly and ill fitting shoes etc. They look so ugly i can no longer wear flip flops or shoes that show the backs of my feet and i can't go swimming anymore which i absolutely love because i'm too embarrassed. I'm only 16, not overweight but have these hideous spurs which are most associated with people in the 50's who are fat!!! I don't know what to do i'm so desperate :( at the moment i'm taking calcium supplements and putting apple cider vinegar on the spurs as i have read this online on helping to get rid of them. Please if anyone knows anything i would love to hear!!! Thank you!!!

  • Answer:

Haglund's deformity is different from a heel spur. Haglund's is usually a hereditary condition showing as a noticeable bump at the back of the heel. With constant rubbing and irritation, it can form a bony protrusion, thus the bone spur. If the bone spurs are pressing on other bones or tissues or are causing a muscle or tendon to rub, they can break that tissue down over time, causing pain and swelling. These are treated by taking antiinflammatory medications, rest, icing, padding the area, or sometimes, corticosteroid injection. Bone spurs can be surgically removed or treated. http://www.naplesheelpain.com/heel-pain.php

Treatment for Bone Spurs: 1. Try Massage - Gently massaging the heel really helps. Stroking the pained area brings up extra blood, further reducing inflammation. 2. Throw Away The Worn Ones - Shoes should be replaced every 300 to 350 miles. 3. Try Over-The-Counter Drugs - It is recommended over-the-counter anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen to reduce pain caused by bone spurs and reduce further inflammation. 4. Apply Heat - Keep inflammation in check with daily heat applications. Hold a heating pad or a hot-water bottle, as warm as can be tolerated and wrapped in a towel, on the affected area for 10 to 15 minutes four to five times a day. 5. Reduce Inflammation - Acute pain can be reduced by applying ice to the inflamed area four to five times a day. Hold an ice pack wrapped in a towel or cloth on the area for 10 minutes, then remove the pack for another 10 minutes. 6. Try Padded Cell - When you are buying new shoes, select supportive, well-padded shoes - the kind with shock-absorbing insoles and a rigid heel support. 7. Avoid Flat Shoes - Unless you find that they really provide adequate support and shock absorption, steer clear of flat shoes. 8. Losing Weight to Cure Your Heel Spurs 9. Steroid injections - This is an EXTREMELY painful procedure, and only provides temporary relief. 10. Night splint - Only helps to reduce morning pain, by stretching the plantar fascia while sleeping.
