How do you relax your jaw?

At night my jaw will not relax and it starts to hurt?

  • Now im not talking about while i sleep or even lay down just at night in general. Its the far back of my jaw that hurts and it makes my ears hurt a little too. i feels like it just wont relax and is tense does anyone know what this is?

  • Answer:

You will need to go to the dentist who may refer you to a dental pain specialist. Sometimes the cause can be a malalignment of the jaw which can be fixed by having a splint made which is worn at night. The splint makes your jaw sit differently and over a period of months your muscles adapt to the new position relieving the pain. If you breathe with your mouth open when you are lying down another possibility is that you have muscle strain from the muscles not being in a relaxed position. If that is the case and ear, nose and throat specialist can widen your nasal passage. A third option is that the pain is being referred from somewhere other than your jaw, for instance if you had significant neck pain. The first option is probably the most likely.

You probably grind your teeth while you sleep. It's completely involuntary and I suggest getting a mouth guard to wear when you sleep. My sister had the same problem and she stopped feeling pain in the morning thanks to the mouth guard. She stopped using the mouth guard a while ago and she tells me that she doesn't even grind her teeth at night anymore. She's pretty much cured.
