What is the best way to get rid of head pain other then meds?

I recently had 4 back surgeries and am in serious need of pain meds yet cannot get any by doctors? more w/i?

  • I had 2 cervical spine surgeries where they grafted parts of my hip to replace degenerated spine. Also allott of pins, rods and stuff were used and are obviously still there. Similar surgeries were done on mythoracicc spine. My legs are getting number by the day. My (R) shoulder as well, when it is not dead numb, it is stabbing pain, very strange feeling all but ignored by the MD's I also had a craniotomy in February 2010, same Neurologist. All these surgeries were quite serious. the spine surgery left me hospitalized for 3 months not to mention physical therapy to walk again. I had the HALO and everything. At first they gave me all the meds I couldd need and more, luckily.. 3x 60 Morphine day, fentanyl, roxicet, percocet, valium (for seizures. Why I say luckily is I was able to take less, despite the immense pain to make almost double the time that I had them as they prescribed me so I would have been done themWAY^ sooner. I even through away the fentenol in the beginning because it made me way too tired. But I had NO idea I would be cut off entirely. I expected at least roxicet or percacet, maybe even oxycontin since it is longer acting. But enough of that. Now, I cannot get ANY pain meds that help, despite my countless MRIs and them NEVER denying that I DO, in fact, need to ne on chronic pain medication! BUT, because of addiction to opiates in my 20's (over 10 years ago) they simply willprescribebe me nothing. Only referred me to get Suboxone (Buprenorphine). I have taken this, even today, yet it does NOTHING for the pain I am in. I don't need that. Those days were in my past. Even when I had COPIOUS amounts of narcotics, I far from abused them. I was afraid to gre addictedd, which I did, but I stopped. I am NOT a kid anymore. I NEED these pain medications. How can they do this???? WHAT CAN I DO???? I can't lie even If I wanted, ALL my drug history is IN my records. Why get addicted to another drug (subutex) thatdoesn'tt even help with pain. That is not an issue for me anymore. I can easily get street drugs virtually free, butdon'tt...for the most part, when it is unbearable. I am about to kill myself if I have to live like this. IT is NOT a life...at all. I would even wish end stage cancer on myself JUST to relieve the pain. I take that back, not would, I DO. What should I do. I am willing to refrature my neck, whatever it takes. I am on county insurance due to the fact I can't work anymore and pay any future insurancehelps if I had to.I am NOTafraid to die, especially now, so please tell me what I can do. Would a suicide attempt help them see I am not drug seeking...even though all the doctors I have seen me have blatantly said"you NEED chronic pain care"

  • Answer:

I sympathize with your situation, you are obviously in a lot of distress. Go to a pain clinic. Look for Pain Clinics in the Yellow Pages under Physicians & Surgeons, it may also be listed under Pain Clinics. Most areas have at least one nowadays. These clinics are made for people who are in your situation. Please don't try to commit suicide, or injure yourself further, I understand your feeling this way, but there are better ways to cope that will lead you back to living your life again. Chronic pain can be very debilitating and can seriously derail your life, as you already know. It does sound as though you may be suffering also from depression, very very common & understandable for someone in your condition. Pain clinics are set up to deal with this also. Please find help & please do not attempt suicide or further injure yourself. Print what you have written on this site and take it and have the doctor read it, they need to know just how bad it is for you. Good luck, please get the help you need so you can feel better and start living again. Don't give up. I know it's hard, but don't give up. Hi Rob. If you are in serious pain now, go to the hospital A+E department and they will have to give you some pain relief. Ideally, diclofenac would be given via suppository, Oramorph orally and Morphine intravenously. I have had the same issues with a few people I know, once a person has a history of 'misuse' it is splashed all over the records in a negative manner. The Fentanyl will not really be sufficient, you need MST 30mg twice daily perhaps and diclofenac. I think the emergency centre should refer you to pain management and do a full assessment with referrals to occupational therapy and disablement benefits to help you, Being an addict in the past is no excuse for them to not prescribe you pain relief if the pain is severe enough.

I am really sensitive to your situation. About 6 years ago I underwent a series of back surgeries for a slipped disc in my lower back. I went through the feelings that you are going through because I did not want to live with this pain either. You need pain management. Pain management specialists are able to address your needs and use not just narcotics to help you. There is a vast aray of drugs that can be used to help you. Currently I take narcotic pain meds and there are some things to keep in mind 1. you cannot stop cold turkey=you have to be weaned off of them. This could be the reason for some of your mental state 2. You do become physically dependent on them- this just means that your body is used to having it in its system, this is NOT addiction (addiction is mental). Get to pain management at get yourself sorted out. A RN inNJ

I am so sorry that you are having this problem, I basically just went through somewhat of the same thing. I was hurting so bad, all I did was lay in bed. My Doctor put me on Lyrica and I am feeling so much better. I know it's hard to think that a non-opiate would even do anything, but this medication is awsome. I couln't walk up the stairs at my Apartment before and now I can get up them with almost no pain at all. I will live with a little pain, when you've experienced as much pain as you and I, a little pain is nothing. I just don't know what I would do without it. I was wanting to die also, I actually thought about how to do it everyday. I didn't leave my home for 2 yrs. That's a terrible way to live. I really hope you get some relief, talk to you Doctor about Lyrica. By the way, I too did get addicted to opiates during my illness and now that I am off of them I feel like a different person. You do have a back problem though, that is a totally different issue. Have you gone to a pain management clinic? I am an Addictions Counselor and I don't see why an issue with addiction to pain pills 10 yrs ago is an issue today? It shouldn't be. Good Luck!

You need more help than yahoo... However you could look into doing clinical trials for pain medications. May even play up your history to have them see effects of dependency on addicts good luck
