What does it feel like to Break a Bone?

  • Please give an accurate description of how it happened, what you were doing, and the amount of pain you felt. I want to know, because I have never broken anything before and I want to know what it feels like.

  • Answer:

I broke my shin bone all the way in half and my big toe on same leg at the same time. I lost control of a three-wheeler and hit a telephone pole going about 35 mph. I tried to jump off before it hit, but it happened too quickly. I was pretty much standing on the foot pegs and trying to jump off to the left when I hit the pole. My left leg got caught in the left tire while it was still spinning at nearly full speed and spun around many times. My whole body actual got spun as well. That part sucked pretty bad. My initial feeling was scared as eff that I was seriously bad off. My whole leg burned really bad, and I guess the best I can describe it is think about why it feels like to accidently bash your shin on something times 1,000. I was wearing jeans so I couldn't see it yet, but I could tell it was crooked. My ankle was humongous. My big toe actually hurt more then my leg. My brother was watching me from the house, waiting his turn ( I was 18, he was 23) when he saw me wreck he came running and called 911. It seemed like forever till the ambulance got there. I think 2 cops and a fire dept guy were there first. The ignorant cop kept saying I was alright, I just sprained my ankle. I wish he would gotten a closer look so I could spit at him lol. The ambulance finally got there, they put me on gurney and cut my sock off and cut up my pant leg to see. When they cut my sock blood spurted up like 3 feet over his shoulder and that really freaked me out because I can't stand blood. My leg was crooked looking and all red from fresh bruising. I couldn't see my toe but the crazy look on the paramedics face said it all. Ok finaly at the er, my parents show up before the put me to sleep for surgery, my dad and brother are snickering and pointing at my foot. So I leaned forward best I could and looked, my toe skin was really crooked and loose like a glove sort of and it was bent in half backwards. The tiny ball and socket bones were completely disconnected and the socket piece was gone. It was just broke off and the tiny ball joint was just sticking out of my toe. Yea no wonder it hurt. The toe pain is hard to describe. Sort of like a bad stub, sort of like a sensitive tooth ache, mixed with what it feels like to get kicked in the shin, but much much worse. Now I have a metal pin in my leg from my knee to my ankle, held in by screws that I can feel through the skin. I can't bend my toe anymore but it's held together with a screw also. My toe took like 6 months to heal, leg about 3 months. Wow that got really long winded sorry about that lol.

I was on the porch dancing to my favorite artist. Then the wind blew and I fell off a very high porch. The pain was so severe I passed out from screaming too much. I said some **MEAN** words to the ambulance just for looking at me. In the end I had to get screws in my leg after I said some more words to the doctors. They had to put me to sleep

I broke my arm on a scooter when I was younger, the bone broke in 3 places-came through the skin, and gravel was imbedded in it. I remember screaming from the pain and it only hurt for a moment, but then went into shock and was completely numb. When I got to the ER the doctor had to move my thumb to put in a splint and then the pain came back. OH MY GOD it was probably a 45 on a scale of 1-10. Then after injecting me with a bunch of pain shots and giving me pills, they had to pop the bone back into place, which was even more painful. I would say I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but it does not feel good, thats for sure.
