Horrible jaw pain without a cause.

What is the cause of this pain near my jaw?

  • I have a pain under my left ear, behind my jaw but a tiny bit above it. Its been hurting an awful lot. Not more when I move my jaw or anything, its just been hurting horribly all day. Im not sure what it could be. My lymph nodes aren't swollen or anything. Please help, thanks.

Hello, An ear infection can cause this. Does it hurt if you put pressure on your ear? Also a sore tooth can make your jaw hurt. If you get really bad allergies and your sinuses are swollen, that can also make your jaw hurt. So can a sinus infection. If it hurts that badly, I'd just go to the doctor and get it over with. Every thing I've mentioned will need treatment for it to feel better. There are a few more things I can thing of that can affect your jaw, like getting slapped in the face! But that might even need to be seen by a doctor. I'd go to the doctor. Being in pain is no fun. Hope this helps

Sounds like TMJ. Do you grind or clinch your teeth in any way??? If you do go to your dentist and ask for a mouth guard. TMJ is not something to take lightly believe me. The longer you wait to get it treated the more issues you have. Hope this helps and hope you feel better soon

You are describing the TMJ (temporomandibular joint). It's also called the "great pretender" because pain from a lot of areas gets referred to there. Google for it. Think of it like an old, cheap AM radio. You know how you get lots of stations on some frequencies? The nerve impulses often cross over and come out at the TMJ. All of this to say you might have a tough time finding out what actually causes that pain. Oh, and the TMJ itself is a weak point so the pain might actually come from there. I'd ask a general practitioner or your dentist. The dentist can diagnose TMJ problems. Hugs and good luck!

You could be having problems with your eustatcian tube, goes from the ear canal to the throat. Try warm compresses. If it does not help see a doc, may be an inner ear infection.

Are you grinding your teeth? Headaches? Sore jaw muscles? Or have you been eating hard or chewy stuff? I used to get sore jaws from eating too much licorice or Tootsie rolls.
