Back pain after standing and walking?

Severe lower back pain after standing or walking for 30 minutes or so?

  • I am a 28 year old female, 175 lbs, 5' 9" in pretty good shape. This past October I was sitting down in a chair and heard a pop and had excrutiating lower back pain. I had an x-ray done with nothing found. Ever since this day I cannot stand or walk too long (like 30 minutes) or my lower back locks up and I am back in severe pain. If I sit for about 10 minutes the pain dissipates. The pain is shooting down the front AND back of my legs to just above the knee and there is also shooting nerve like pain in my hips when these episodes occur any suggestions?

Hi, since this pain has been more than 6 months, you really need to get a MRI. This picks up what x-rays can't, like a fracture. This does not sound like something that is going to just go away on its own, and sounds just miserable to live with. I would suggest you see a Orthopedic surgeon right away, who will find out the cause of your pain. I had severe back pain and a shooting pain down my left leg, and my left butt muscle felt like it had an ax in it all the time, it was horrible, I had to have a MRI,and had a herniated disc. I had to have surgery, and since then do throw my back out from time to time, but after a few weeks I am straight again. This is not to say you would have to have surgery, that is usually a last resort, but they have great medications that help decrease the inflammation, and also could send you to physical therapy. Good Luck!!

Yes, it does sound like sciatica. This is a video with a very good stretch for sciatica, try practising it every day and I'm sure you'll feel the difference soon. http://natural-alternative-therapies.com/sciatica-stretch/

Sounds like it could be sciatica.

You tightened up back muscles when that pop happened. When you go walking the pressure of the spine just moving that little bit is constantly pressing on the tight muscles to cause them to go into pain. When you sit the spine quits pressing on them so the pain goes away. Tight muscles in your lower back can press onto the nerves going to your legs and hips to cause the pains in them. Freeing up your back muscles will get rid of these pains for you and here's how to free them up: Back: (do from a sitting position) Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly pull down on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side. For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.
