How to get into medical school?

How do I get through medical school if I don't like seeing broken bones, or people in pain.?

  • I am not in medical school yet. I would like to be a M.D. Specializing in Psychiatry. But in medical school they teach you everything. I do not want to cut anyone open or see any gore, I cannot even watch medical shows with people in pain that are hurt. I prefer to deal with the mind. What can I do to get over that?

Great question! I'm currently in medical school and going into psychiatry. I had the same issue the first few times that I saw those kind of things. And it does happen to medical students on occasion! I would suggest some desensitization. Try to get used to seeing some of those things on TV. Later move on to going to the OR (operating room) shadowing a physician to see some less invasive surgeries. By that I mean something that doesn't gross you out just by hearing about it. Just expose yourself to a little more all the time. Eventually you will be able to handle even an open heart surgery! I almost passed out during my first surgery, but after you've seen a lot it's not as big a deal. You get over it. You do things because you have to do them. Gross Anatomy deal with dissecting a complete cadaver. That is a dead person. It is a lot more smelly than a real person, but a lot less sad than seeing one of your patients die after they have been circling the drain for a week, or being in the ER and seeing a 9 year old shot because she got caught in some Mexican drug cartel firefight. It is part of being a doctor. You have work to do. You deal with it. Objectivity is part of being a doctor. Maybe I'm just cold, but every medical student deals with it. I have not known anyone to drop out because of that. You'll do fine. Good luck.

You cannot. I think you are more interested in psychology. Psychiatry deals with the medical aspect and you need to understand the medical issue. How are you going to distinguish between some problem caused by traumatic brain injury from one caused by oxygen deprivation?

Why don't you become a liscensed clinical social worker instead. That way you can work with patients on a therapeutic level without having to endure medical school.
