Can depression cause severe abdominal pain?

  • I have suffered from depression for a few years, however, I took myself off my medication about a year and a half ago. I have experienced more depression symptoms -dread, uncontrollable crying, loss of appetite, insomnia, etc. About 5 days ago, I started having severe abdominal pains and went to the ER twice - diagnosed with ovarian cyst and urinary tract infection. The treatment I was given for both of these diagnoses has done little to help the pain. I was wondering, could the pain be caused by my depression?

    Yes, your depression symptoms can be causing alot of strain on your digestive system. We are 'whole' people. If one thing is going wrong then other things can as well. The cyst and UTI are part of the other things as well as your abdominal pains. Get yourself back to a doctor ASAP , for depression meds, before more things go wrong.

i suppose depression could wreak havoc but between the cyst and the infection seem more likely for the sources. have you tried meditation or relaxation techniques ? if you calm your mind, you calm the body,and your Dr should have given you something.

No, depression alone cannot cause abdominal pains. However, many of the medicines you take for it often can and do cause abdominal pain. Sometimes its because they put you on the wrong kinds of medicine for your system, and sometimes it is the right medicine but it is prescribed in the wrong dosage. If that happened, it is possible that you are having a delayed reaction to the affects of some of the medicines that you took previously. Or, it could be a stress reaction to not taking the medicines any longer. It could also be a symptom of anxiety attacks, when all the muscles of the body tense up in fear.
