I keep getting these "attacks" where I have extreme pain in my back, chest, and upper abdominal area.?

I keep getting these "attacks" where I have extreme pain in my back, chest, and upper abdominal area. Its been going on for about a year now and it happens randomly, probably once a month or every two months. It seems to get worse the next time I get it. It is the worst pain that I have ever felt and it last about an hour. What could be wrong with me?
