PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR FEEDBACK. I FEEL THAT THIS NEEDS WORK! ANY SUGGESTIONS WILL BE APPRECIATED! Here's what I have thus far: There are many aspects of my life that have shaped my desire to become an Occupational Therapist. I have always known that if you want to help solve others people’s problems, it can only be done by educating them on how to help themselves. I look at the career of an Occupational Therapist as one who teaches others to help themselves. Watching people progress because they were taught how to become more independent is what I want my career to consist of. This is why I have chosen Occupational Therapy as my career path. I work at an out-patient Physical Therapy clinic, and although majority of the care plan focuses on the patient’s physical status, on getting rid of pain in a particular area or regaining a normal range of motion after a surgery through stretching and strengthening exercises. There is also another unique aspect of our treatment plan that we focus on which teaches the patient how to live their daily lives with their ailments. Three years ago I found a passion for teaching and educating patients on how they can perform their daily activities during their treatment. My job now consists of teaching patient’s how to use durable medical equipment items that will better their quality of life by allowing them to be more independent. More recently, I have been delivering home kits Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS Units) in which I also run through a tutorial and show patient’s in their homes how the unit can help make their pain more manageable so that they can continue on with their day to day life. I also teach patients how and what type of assistive devices would be best for them based on their current lifestyle. Three years working at this rehabilitation clinic and I have become the “go to” person for their Durable Medical Equipment. I find a lot of satisfaction in knowing that I have taught someone something valuable that will benefit their quality of living. Much of the work that I have done was self taught. I found myself always taking on new obstacles. My solution to majority of my obstacles is research. I can recall times when a patient had a particular need for an item or brace in which I was not familiar with. This would require me to do extensive research, calling their Insurance Company to see if a particular item was even available to them, getting information from our suppliers on improvements on products to better customize a particular need, seeking help from other durable medical equipment companies and learning all this information in a timely manner and well enough so that I can explain and teach the patient how to use their new item. In the process of doing what was my job, I feel that I have sharpened my interpersonal skills because communication plays the biggest role in what I do. I have grown very passionate in what I do and would like to learn more and continue helping people regain their independence by teaching them a modified way on how to perform the activities that they love to do and not let their disability set limits on their lives. Another aspect of my life which has shaped my decision to want to become an Occupational Therapist would be my younger brother who has Autism. My whole life, I have witnessed the wonders of having a supportive and loving family. My brother now 16; reads, cooks himself meals, is able to use the restroom with no assistance, is able to shower/take care of all his hygienic needs on his own and is able to even do his own house chores. A lot of these tasks took much longer for him to learn than any other normal developing child would take. It took a lot of patience from my parents and me to always show him the right way to do something. Repetition, creativity, patience and a good sense of humor are all traits that I have acquired in order to help my brother progress the way he has. I have always been raised in a family that believes in going the extra mile to help those who cannot help themselves by teaching them. I am however, fully aware that not all children are as lucky as my brother and may not have a family full of encouragement and patience. I volunteer for a special needs Catechism group and have seen severe cases of Down Syndrome and Autism that require full time assistance. The volunteers at this group come up with activities each week that the group can participate in to help improve on various life skills, (and in the process we tie in the Catholic Religion, since it is Catechism.) I feel that because of my background I have grown as a person and have acquired a strong sense of patience and sense of humor. I feel that my knowledge, background and life experiences will help me excel as I reach my goal in becoming an Occupational Therapist. I feel that a patient can maintain a good, independent quality of life when they are educated on how they can help themselves.

Answer:
I would be careful what you say because you are not a PT and you are doing things that only a PT does. An aide should not be teaching someone how to do anything. They should be counting reps and folding towels.
