Taking the SAT in less than a week, aiming for at least a 1300, need study tips!?
-
I'm taking the SAT for the first time on January 23rd (a little less than a week.) I've been reviewing some old math concepts and doing vocabulary flashcards, but I feel like I really need to step it up this week. I'm aiming for at least a 1300 (NOT including writing). In August I took a practice SAT and got a score of 1200. I took another in November or December, after I had been reviewing for a month or so, and got a 1350. (Big leap, huh?) (Both of these practice tests were from the same website, but were not the same test.) This year on my PSAT, I had a 64 on critical reading, a 64 on math and a 73 on writing. I'm not sure if this is any indication of how I'll do on the real thing, though... Can someone give me some study tips for the next week? I really, really need some good prep tips. I want to get into New College of Florida, and I want to blow them away with my scores. Also, can someone tell me if my goals are realistic, and how to achieve those goals?

Answer:
psat's reflect your score on the SAT reallllyyy well. You should definitely get at least 1280, probably 1300. It's a realistic goal, believe me. for practice, you could go on collegeboard.com, and do some SAT practice questions. if you have time, you could find a collegeboard SAT prep book and take some official practice tests, since it's collegeboard that makes the SAT. collegeboard also has a thing where you could get daily SAT questions sent to your email. generally, your scores improve as you take more tests. Another thing, take the ACT too. It is a much better in regards to format, timing, and content., and everyone i know has scored better on it (some friends who scored ~1500/2400 on SAT scored ~30/36 on ACT (30/36 = 2000/2400)) edit: do not stress out! Stressing out might actually cause your results to worsen. The scores you've gotten are solid, and you should keep in mind that it's not just scores colleges look at. A person with a 2400/2400 and no extra curricular activities or community service or any out of school involvement is a weaker candidate than a person with a 1900 an SAT and community/school/work involvement Oh, and sorry for doing everything out of 2400, it's the format i'm used to, though your writing score made me jealous, i only got 620 on that, my sore for writing actually went lower from psat to sat, bit i'm not surprised because i remember thinking too muvh about it and confusing myself

Dear Taylor, Since you only have a few more days before your first SAT, you should continue reviewing the concepts that you're weak in and do actual questions from old SATs. However, you simply cannot "cram" for this test, so trying to re-learn too many old concepts now can actually work against you. You should, however, review the tips and strategies for taking the SAT. Know when to make an educated guess versus when to skip the question altogether, as you will lose 1/4 point for each incorrect answer. Being familiar with these strategies and knowing timing for each section will only help you. One more thing, on Friday, please do not study at all. You should get a good night's sleep and eat a healthy breakfast on Saturday. Best of luck! -Rhonda
