Get good grades but bad at applying knowledge to tests such as the SAT's?
-
I have been thinking about this lately, I get good grades in college, right now holding a 3.52 GPA in my Sophomore year, but when it comes to applying the knowledge that I learn to tests such as the SAT's, I pretty much fail. For example, I do really well in Math Classes, always getting an "A" in the classes, but if I was to try and apply my knowledge to a test such as the SAT's I would more than likely fail. I got a 460 on my math SAT section, but my math grades in high School and in college are all A's, why does this happen, am I not retaining the information or am I stupid? What's the reason for this? Do you think that the SAT's really measure mental capabilities and intelligence?

Answer:
It's probably primarily retention of knowledge. In addition, tests like the SATs require you to think analytically and recognize patterns, whereas class tests are usually rote memorization of specific problem types and rarely involve application. The SAT does, in a sense, measure intelligence, but it measures test-taking skills more. While you probably won't be able to score a 2400 if you aren't "smart" enough, if you don't have good test-taking skills, you could easily do badly while being top of your class. Sadly, most careers in life involve application, so the most you can do with that is just learn to recognize patterns.

Hey Musicdude, The SAT is a reasoning test while high school tests are a test of the curriculum covered in high school. It's likely that you misread a couple of SAT questions (i.e. solved for x rather than for x + y) or they caught you in a couple of reasoning traps. You can learn to beat these traps (and understand how the questions are written to trick you) by reviewing a good SAT math book. I am a fan of the PowerScore Math Bible myself---I know the author quite well ;)---but there are many good ones out there that can help. Good luck!
