Can I take SAT Subject Tests instead of the regular SAT?
-
Is it a good idea for me to take SAT Subject Tests instead of the regular SAT? I took the PSAT and didn't do very well, especially in math. I would rather take Subject Tests in the areas I'm strong in but I'm not sure if this is even possible. I've checked the College Board site and couldn't find any information about taking subject tests in place of the regular SAT. The only reason why I even thought of this was because someone told me that's what they intended to do but I wasn't sure if they were implying that they would also take the regular SAT in conjunction with the subject tests. Thanks (:

Answer:
I give you points for being creative but, unfortunately, the answer is no. Most colleges that require the SAT or ACT also will require SAT IIs (subject matter tests). However, you can't take the Subject Tests in lieu of the regular SAT. If you are concerned about your SAT score, you should get a study guide, like Barron's, and start reviewing for the test. Begin by taking the practice test and then look at the specific types of questions that you got wrong. Review those subjects and take lots of tests. Also, review the tips and strategies section so that you will know when to guess and when to leave an answer blank. You may also want to take the ACT. The ACT tests what you have actually learned at school but the trick is the time allotted per section. The Real ACT study guide will give you a good idea if you are better suited to that test over the SAT. Virtually all colleges will accept either the SAT or ACT. In addition, you may want to look into getting a private tutor. Your tutor will keep you on track, answer your questions and provide you with the proper instruction to do your best on the SAT or ACT. Is that what they call "SAT II"? If so, you'd normally be expected to do either the SAT or ACT as well. (Based on what British universities ask of American students).
