If facts were all humankind required, then every man armed with a dictionary and encyclopedia would have the key to becoming the king of the world. Facts are succinct, straightforward, and closed. In case of a normative statement, there is no scope for interpretation, no scope for further analysis. If we lived solely on the basis of established conjecture, we would be forced to a black-and-white existence, imprisoned by the boundaries we ourselves have constructed. With the power of reason, by questioning what is put before us, we can add color to a greyscale existence. A modern instance of the current trend to attach less value to facts is the college admission process. In addition to their standardized test scores, students also submit personal essays, and often appear for interviews as well. But why? Shouldn't the test be an adequate measure of academic capability? The answer is no.
