I really need some help writing my personal statement for a nursing program.

I have to take the Nursing Exam next year to get in the nursing program and I need help with the English vocab?

  • Okay, I am only lacking two pre-requisites and I will be getting ready to take the nursing entrance exam to get in the program next year. My major is Nursing (RN) and I have one problem. I was 16 yrs old when I first came to the US and English is my third language. And I have some problems with the English vocabulary. I know the Medical Terms of course and I can speak and write in English very good. But it's just that there's a lot of "big words" in English that I am not familiar with. In this entrance exam that I will need to take, there are 40 questions of just the English vocabulary words and I am very worried about it. There millions of big words that I can't study all of them lol. How will I prepare myself for this exam? I want to be a Registered Nurse so bad, I am half way there and there is just one thing that is scaring the hell out of me. Are there websites I can go to to practice or books for me to practice? Please don't say I should study the dictionary. You know there's millions of words there.

  • Answer:

Don't take the english section as very difficult. Its not difficult. You do have to prepare for that though. Yes, there are many big and difficult words. You can't find all the required information at one place at any free website online. You will only waste your time surfing free websites. Firstly read the details about the type of questions which are asked in the exam. Then go to your local book store and just buy an English Guide. The english synonyms and antonyms section is what you should study. I have studied it previously for an exam. Just read the words, you will discover that you already know a lot. It isn't really difficult. Just remember the words you aren't aware of. Don't waste time online. Buy a good english vocabulary guide and start preparing. Also don't devote all your time on learning the english words. There are various other types of questions. Do prepare for them. Good Luck!

Other answers

Watch as little TV as possible and do not spend too many hours on your PC. READ, READ, READ newspapers, books and, yes, have your dictionary handy to look up words you do not know. If you like some words start using them in your own speech or writings. Forget the word "nice" and use other words to say exactly what you mean.

You DO write English very well; maybe you are worrying too much. I don't know much about web sites but the best way to pick up vocabulary is to read and have a dictionary on hand. The New York Times is challenging reading. Or, there are books to build vocabulary / increase your "word power"; since you have close to a year, you could buy one and slowly go through it. And reading the dictionary IS sort of helpful! Some poets have done it...Also maybe there is a coach or tutor.
