I'm thinking of starting to study for them over the summer, before grade 10- I was wondering what exactly I should study, how long I should study each day, etc. Thank you (:

    There are usually three components for the SAT preparation: 1. Master the SAT words 2. Learn the content that is tested on the SAT 3. Do the SAT practice tests (for this item: the college board book "the official SAT study guide" is the best) The key here is how to complete the above three tasks most efficiently. So when you select your learning material such as books or courses, you need to evaluate it to see if it provides all the resources (SAT words, courses, practice, tips, strategies etc), if it provides tools to enable you to prepare for the SAT most effectively, and if it is cost-effective. When I prepared for my SAT last semester, I took the online "SAT self training kit" program at http://www.northstarelearning.com/sat-self-training-kit and was able to increase my SAT score to 2310. Get a copy of the big fat blue Collegeboard SAT book and take some practice tests to see how you do. I think a section a day would be okay. Also, you should take an SAT course over the summer before 11th grade. As long as you work hard, they usually help you boost around 200-400 points overall. Math requires just basic skills -- everything is Algebra 2 and below. Critical reading is just vocabulary, comprehension, and inference-type questions from passages. Try reading classics to help boost your vocab and sense of writing. You can try doing old SAT tests and see what kinds of vocabulary words they frequently use. Writing includes grammar questions and the timed essay (which in my opinion is the hardest). Just do a lot of practice and pace yourself. Try to save around 5-10 minutes at the end of each section to check over your answers. Also, try to sit through a full test (3 hours 45 minutes) a couple of times before you take the real thing. Most people I know who did this got at least a 2000. Good luck!

You could buy an SAT prep book. I would recommend taking them when your in 10th grade, though because if you do poorly, it gives you enough time to study more and take it again. You'll want to study math mostly because the other two parts (writing and critical reading) aren't really anything you can study for. Make sure you know algebra and some simple geometry and trig functions. Its not as hard as you think but make sure you study at least 5 minutes a day 5 months before the test. Then increase it by 10 minutes each month closer to the test. Good luck!
