Should I take the AP World History exam?
-
I plan on majoring or minoring in history in college, so I want to take as many AP history classes as I can. I took Modern World History this year, and did very well. I've signed up to take AP US history next year, and I wanted to take AP World History as well, but my school does not offer it. The only World History class I can take is just the regular course. World History is my favorite class, so I am willing to put in the extra effort, buy review books, etc. just to pass the AP exam. Is this a good idea? How hard are these exams? What other classes should I take that would look good on my transcript?

Answer:
When you consider the cost of an average undergrad class, taking an AP exam is easily a smart financial move. I passed enough AP classes in HS to become a sophomore after just one semester of college because of the extra college credits I had. Some universities are really stingy and won't count them but many are very good about it. Anyway, getting to skip taking western civ (basically a second time since you took the AP Class) in college is great because you can replace it with something a bit more interesting. I was a history major and took all sort os really odd history classes because yes I had a bunch of credits in random things, but still needed to take x number of history credits to graduate. So while my firneds were in western civ 1 and 2 and US History I was taking "The History of Magic, withccraft and religion" and "Air Power in military history." It kicked butt! So yeah to make a long story short - AP rocks.

if you studied it independently, it would be very hard, but could work out for you. you would probably need an actual textbook that was meant for ap however, not just a bunch of prep books. you would also need to learn how to write the types of essays, as there are certain rubrics and requirements for the DBQ (document based question) and FRQs (free response questions)- which are CCOT (change/continuity over time) and the compare contrast essay. you can look those on http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/sub_worldhist.html?worldhist for me though, i wouldnt have been able to learn about writing the essays well indepentently, i needed my teacher to help me with that. the course isnt that hard though, its just a lot easier when you take it with a class that is meant for it. good luck! :)
