How can I improve my ACT score?
-
I just got my ACT score and let's just say, I am not happy with it and neither is my mom. I already knew I wouldn't do extraordinary, but I didn't think I would only get a 21. It's not that I didn't study hard, because I did. I practiced with timing myself and I tried to focus on the areas I had trouble with, yet I still didn't do as well as I could have and that's what bugs me. I know I can get a higher score, but most things I have read say you really only improve 2 points when you take the test again. I get good grades and everything, however, I never do as well on tests and I've never really taken a test like the ACT before. So, does anyone have any tips on how I can improve my score? My mom is going to find me a different test preparation curriculum, but does anyone have any other ideas on what I can do? I'm really kicking myself right now and it doesn't help that one of my close friends got a 29. I don't think she's smarter than me nor I her, she's just a really good test taker. And where I struggle with math and science (I still get good grades most of the time) but do well in english, she must do well in all of those. Anyway, any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:
A lot of times you can improve you scores and study better for things like this by doing at least one or two practice questions a day starting months before you even retake the test. By doing this, answering questions like this will become second nature to you and you'll start to learn what type of questions they like to ask. And the best part is is that studying this way only takes about 10 minutes each day. The ACT site actually has a new practice question each day so you can look at those.

I've been an SAT/ACT tutor and college adviser for 24 years. Please DON'T just get a bunch of ACT books and take tests over and over again. From all the studies I've read, you can overdo it with the ACTs. If you do more than a certain amount of prep, your scores will actually start to go down. Not only that, the more you take tests, the more you're reinforcing a technique that doesn't work for you. (If it worked for you, you'd be happier with your scores!) My best recommendation is to get a private tutor who has experience working with the ACTs. I'm in NY, but I do work with students via Skype. Call your school's guidance department for recommendations -- the guidance counselors know which tutors are effective. If you decide just to work with a book, go over each incorrect answer (and every answer you got right but merely guessed at) to see why the right answer IS the right answer. Good luck!
