Do I have to take the TOEFL exam in the future?

  • I knew a someone who applied to a college, and he got rejected and they told him he has to take the TOEFL exam. He was not born in the United States and English was his second language. I am an American citizen and University graduate. I now teach English (mainly TOEFL prep) in South Korea. First of all, it depends on what school you go to if you have to take the TOEFL or not. Some schools don't even accept the TOEFL and some require it. The point of the TOEFL is to just your ability to function in a University setting in English. They used to just accept SAT, ACT, and other schools but found that some foreign students knew English grammar up and down but couldn't hold a real conversation with their classmates or professors. This a reason why TOEFL has a six part speaking portion. If you attended a US public High School all four years you may get a pass on taking the TOEFL. Furthermore, other Universities that are Ivy league or highly ranked will not always require the TOEFL since their acceptance requires an interview portion. My best advice would be that you should email all the Universities you are planning to apply to and ask. It really depends on you and where you're planning to go to school. Good luck!!

Take it just in case. I'm half chinese, born in hong kong but I went to an international school who taught in english... So I don't have to. I also have friends who recently learned english and are now very fluent and don't have to. Do you take EAL? (english learning support) if you do, then yes take TOEFL.
