SAT Scores for Admissions?

Are SAT scores also used for things other than college admissions?

  • Are your SAT scores used when applying for your desired program your Sophomore year of college?

  • Answer:

Hi kiskfrnf (so easy to pronounce!), I think that for the most part, the answer is "no." In particular, it's unlikely that your college will prevent you from pursuing a given degree because of your SAT scores. However, it's emphatically *not* true that no one will ever care about your SAT scores after matriculation. Many applications for internships and new-grad jobs ask you to report SAT scores. I'm not sure how much of a factor this is in determining offers, but they definitely ask. I hope that helps! - P

If you mean are they determined in who gets priority or something when you declare a major, the answer is no. Colleges usually have enough resources that they don't have to cap off the amount of people who enter a major because they also have historical data and try to balance the admitted class out so that it's not all kids who want to study Biology or Psychology or English or another popular major. Basically, once you're in a college, the SAT doesn't mean anything anymore. Outside of college applications, the SAT is rarely used for some summer programs (Johns Hopkins CTY, Duke TIP) where middle school students take it to try and qualify for selective programs around the country, but in relation to you, it's not going to make a difference once you're in college.
