How many people in the usa are actually working?

Compared to how many people are in the usa

Answer:
Everyone in the US is working..... working at being Awesome!!! Lets see, there is a %8.3 unemployment rate, and the work force is 154,731,000 so that's about 12,842,673 people out of work but I don't think that includes military so 1,456,862 more people with jobs... You get the point. Even though the US seems to be economically suffering right now our GDP is 9 trillion dollars more then the second place power China. If you look at a graph as well, we are coming out of our little recession currently and the GDP is rising again. The US also has a high GDP per capita which is not the highest in the world but in the top ten. The strange thing about that is the fact that the US is a huge country and can still make it on the list. The other country's are mainly small, or tiny.

Currently, 141,412,000 American residents have jobs out of a total population of 312,780,968 That is 45.2% of the total population (But try not to forget that does NOT mean we have 55% unemployment! Of the 171,368,968 Americans NOT working, 75,067,432 are infants, or children under 18, and another 46,917,145 are retired) That leaves 19,079,639 working age folks actually unemployed, which is closer to 6.5% than the "official" number of 8.5% calculated using the 'new method of calculation' recently imposed by the Republican-dominated Congress, who seem to see it as their duty to make everything appear far worse than it really is!

Statistical Abstracts has stopped collecting data. Latest published info (2010) showed 139 million working out of 312 million people. Numbers employed have dropped since then. Shadowstats, using the same statistical procedures that were used pre-Clinton era methodology "adjustments" (so data can be compared historically), calculates real unemployment at 22.5%. Others, accounting for new entrants to the workforce (not counted in official data), calculate unemployment at 28-33% of the total workforce. Various published sources put unemployment rate for 16-24 y.o.s over 50%. Don't forget that lots of "self-employed" and freelancers are actually unemployed job hunters, ditto for many forced into "early retirement" who cannot afford and do not want to retire, and "temp" workers seeking "real jobs" and full-time permanent employment. So are new grads, new immigrants, foreign workers looking for jobs & employment visas, and more. Estimates are there are over 31 million jobhunters in the US, and that still does not count new immigrants & foreign job seekers.
