How to become a vegetarian?
-
Hi I am 15 years old and always kind of had the idea in my mind of becoming a vegetarian, but really feel determine to after seeing a PETA video on where your meat comes from. I've never really loved pork or chicken so that is easiest to drop but I really love steak. Another issue is that everyone in my family loves meat. I tried bring up the topic of becoming vegetarian, and I my mom started complaining about how she has no clue on how to cook vegetarian meals. So here are my questions: How can I become a vegetarian gradually? Do you know any really good vegetarian meals and recipes? I already know about a recipe for making vegetarian tacos with fake meat that tastes good so I know one meal hahaha

Hello! (: I'm happy to hear that you've considered being a vegetarian. As a vegan myself, I found the easiest way for me was to just cut myself off from meat. It worked quite well for me, but if you don't believe that will help, then try selecting one meat to not eat ever again. So say you start with chicken. Do not eat chicken for a week, or until you feel comfortable selecting another meat to add to that. Soon you will have no meats left. As for good vegetarian recipes, I buy Morning Star products. They have soy patties - from chicken, grilled and breaded, to hamburgers and chicken tenders. You can always just substitute those for meat, and they taste quite well. As for your family, be stern, but not harsh, and tell them it is your choice. You will still receive a healthy amount of protein and such if you continue to eat healthy. I wish you the best of luck!

If you want to still eat steak, get meat that comes from cows on a REAL farm, not a factory farm.

Well the vast majority of slaughterhouses are actually very humane. The videos that PETA makes are just examples of the few exceptions of slaughterhouses that are inhumane.

One option to becoming a vegetarian gradually would be to become a pescetarian first. A pescetarian is essentially a vegetarian who will eat seafood. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pescetarianism This option might be a little easier on your mom, too. Maybe she'd be willing to fix fish a couple times a week (which would also be healthier for the rest of the family). My daughter chose this option a few years ago. She's not sure if she'll ever choose to become a "full" vegetarian (though she has said there's no way she'd ever go vegan), but at this point, she's okay with eating seafood as the living conditions are nothing like they are for land animals who are raised for food. Make this as easy for your mom as possible so that she's less likely to feel like this is a burden for her. Maybe you could offer to fix one of the meals each week. For other meals, if she's willing to modify things a bit, you can easily eat the same thing as the rest of the family. For example, something like a stir fry - if she'll add the meat AFTER stir frying the rice/veggies, she can separate a portion for you first.

I have been a Vegetarian for a year and a few months now, I am 13. -Don't eat meat, instead just eat tofu, I really hate the taste of tofu, but I like Schneiders oh naturel meatless tofu balls and meatless chicken, it's all made of soy and it tastes really good, even my friend likes it. Make sure your eating tofu at least once a day. Another thing I have learned is read the ingredients on EVERYTHING! Gravy has cooked chicken broth, but you can find vegetarian gravy at your grocery store, also milk and eggs and any dairy product consists of rennet and casein, which is the inside of a cows stomach, so try to get soy milk and egg and cheese and read the ingredients. When going to a restaurant I recommend just ordering a salad, too. Make sure your getting enough protein like from beans and vegetables and soy. Good luck :)

Est beans which are natually occuring. Tofu is a precipitate of soy beans which are toxic to humans. The only way to get rid of the toxins is to ferment it, but tofu is not fermented. Dang. So look at beans, avoid buying them out of cans with plastic liners as it's toxic too. While you're getting it all sorted enjoy eggs! red lentil dahls are quick and easy to make. hummus is made from chickpeas, which is so delicious and fun to make, you can boil those beans from scratch and blend them in a food processor. Check out black eyed bean recipes from the South. Mashed red kidney beans and semolina(semonlina is a binder and egg substitute) make good vegan burgers.
