How long could it take me to learn how to become a 3D artist?

• I want to learn how to make things like 3D models and stuff. I know it could take a long time, cause it looks super complcated...but how long would be a good estimate of time? Don't just say ...years... I know it could take years...but how many. There is a big difference between 5 and 10. 10 might be to long, 5 might be workable. You see where I'm going with this? I want to make realistic 3D models, like realitic animals, and objects, so that the look real. How long would it take me? And where do I start learning?

  I'd say 3-5 years you have to put the work in though. Maybe less! I don't think it would take 10 considering you can do a uni course in less than that time and then get in the industry. You can learn online lots of people have put tutorials on the web for free. If you want program to start you off blender is free http://www.blender.org/ there's also tutorials here http://www.blender.org/education-help/tutorials/ The main 2 in the industry are Maya and 3Dsmax, these do just about everything. My personnal favourite is Softimage, I think it's got a better work flow and is more easy to understand, although it's not used as widely. Cinema 4D is a good cheaper option. Zbrush and mudbox are the high end stuff for modelling.
