Where does my surname come from?

Where did the surname Jesalva come from?

  • I have someone from work whose surname is Jesalva and I'm just so curious where the surname originated? I read some records of people from Brazil, Nigeria and Philippines holding the surname. Thank you so much

  • Answer:

Silva is an Iberian name. When they conquered Latin America, they converted the locals. Whichever priest converted the locals gave them his name DeSilva. meaning from Silva. In due course some corrupted it to Jesalva.

There is one Jesalva listed a few times in the passenger records who was a crew member. He was listed as Pacific Islander, which probably means Filipino. The name is pretty rare in the US, but not as rare in the Philippines.

Yes you are correct it is certainly a surname that is used in those counties from around 1800s and it seems to be a spelling variant of Spanish origin as I found records of similar surnames from the 1500s........................
