If I want to work with animals, what should I Major in?

I desperately want to work with animals, but I don't know what to do? Help?

  • Hello, I've always wanted to work with animals, but I don't know what career would be a good choice for me. I can't become a veterinarian, or veterinarian technician. Blood, guts and bones just make me sick to my stomach. I tried and tried to break myself from my squeamish habit, but it's not worth it. I can't do it, I just get so ill. So I need some good ideas on what to become, just a good career to get me by in the bills. I'm not asking for something that would make me 60k a year, but I just want to be happy and work with animals. I'm in a slump :( Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

There are other options! There is Marine Biology, where you could work with some animals like invertebrates that don't bleed as much or at all! Or you could work at a pet shop, you could do conservation stuff, pet sitting (more of a side job, but at least you'd get to see animals as part of your day!) or even working with camps at a local aquarium or zoo. There's a lot of jobs at varying skill levels. The blood thing is very limiting though. Good luck! There's also always rehabilitation or working with service animals too.

Google careers with animals, to see what you come up with. You could go to your local pet supply store, and some of them actually offer training for people to become dog groomers, if you start out as a bather (try Petco and Petsmart, for exampele). If you think you might be interested, you should consider whether you are: patient, pretty thorough, like people, willing to take criticism. Apparently, good groomers are hard to come by. Who woulda' thought. (My daughter works in a grooming facility, but she is a bather, where many start out. She said she would not like to be a groomer, since the clients are pretty picky and treat their pets like their kids). Another hot area is home pet sitters, for when people go on vacation. These people go to the house and feed and care for the animals while the people are away. Here are a couple things from a similar search, and good luck: http://www.anapsid.org/resources/jobs.html http://www.petfinder.com/how-to-help-pets/careers-animals-job.html http://www.ehow.com/about_4797359_careers-with-animals.html

You could always be a zoologist who either studies animals in a lab for scientific purposes or in their natural habitat for even greater scientific purposes. Or I assume it's greater who knows, what I do know is that zoologist and jobs like it such has marine biologists are some of the best ways that you can actually help the animals your really passionate about. Also their are jobs you take were you would work with a single species or group of animal, for example I have a cousin who has traveled the world studying bats. I can't remember the name of his job but I'm sure if you think of what type of animals you want to work with then you could do a google search on some kind of job that deals with them, and if you can't find anything email me and I wouldn't mind helping someone who wants to help animals. P.S. You could always be a park ranger, they do have cool hats in the movies.
