How Many Weeks Left Until Christmas?

In your opioion is it wrong not to spend christmas with 'family'?

  • Okay so I'm 19 years old and I go to college full time. I live on campus. I really don't know what to do for christmas break. I have spent the past few years very unhappy at christmas. Not because of presents or anything like that but just that after we give gifts I'm still left feeling empty and alone because my parents go right back to working. Plus, this year my family and I have not gotten along well at all. Aunt and uncles and cousins wise. I love my parents soo much but I don't know if I should go home for christmas this year. I know I will spend most of my 3 week vacation alone. I don't want that. I just want to be happy. My friend asked me to go spend the break with her and her family. I'm really considering it. I think its rude for me to be at her house during christmas but its the days and weeks after christmas I wouldn't have to spend alone. I'd spend it with my best friend. I'd spend it with people. I really don't know what to do. My mom says do what makes me happy and my dad thinks its a sin not to spend it with them. I know that this is one christmas I can't take back if I miss it with my parents but I also know I've spent the last few christmases feeling alone. I'm stuck. I'm just looking for opioions. I'm just looking to be happy this year.

  • Answer:

I think you should tell your parents exactly what you have said here. That you love them but that you are very lonely and it makes you sad to be alone when they are working so much. Tell them you understand why they have to work but could they be understanding with how you feel as well. Explain to them what you were considering. Maybe you could do both. If you don't talk to them and tell them the truth and explain your feelings then they won't understand. If for some reason they are not understanding and act indifferent to your feelings then it would be on you to make the decision for yourself. I do not know who is paying for your education but you may have to consider that since sometimes parents can get kind of bytchy about the fact they are paying for things like that, which is costly, and that kids are not grateful....

Spend it with your parents while you have them. In '91 I had both of my folks for Christmas but that following June my mother passed, then in November just 2 days after he turned 70 my father passed. That Thanksgiving was a nightmare and Christmas was hard. Even though I put the tree up and decorated, after I got up, opened the gifts I couldn't stand to be home with my 2 dogs one minute more and had to call a friend and get out because it was just too difficult to be there without either of my parents. Even though don't have problems now (then again I don't live in the same place anymore I have an apartment far away from there) I have spent all day Christmas Day alone and quite enjoyed it but the lesson here is even though your family is dysfunctional (and all are to some extent) they are the only family you will have. Your father is wrong because it's not a "sin" to not spend it with family (god knows what would happen if you married somebody whose parents lived over a 1000 miles away then he'd really have a meltdown) and your mother is right do what makes you happy. No it's not wrong to spend the holiday with your friend whose family you enjoy being with but cherish the time that you have your parents.

Nope! I don't spend Christmas with my family either.
