What are some good homemade Christmas presents?

What are some good ideas for inexpensive yet thoughtful christmas presents?

  • I just got my last paycheck before Christmas and after crunching the numbers I don't think I'm going to be able to afford presents for my whole family. I'm 20 and money is tight.... I've got to get presents for at least 4 people (three sisters and my mom). I'm literally in tears because I'm so stressed about getting presents for everyone .... I probably have enough money to get decent presents for two people. Its just not going to work. I'm a pretty artistic girl so I figured maybe I could make some presents, but I dont want it to seem cheap like a cop-out of buying presents. I don't want it to appear thrown together and careless. Because I do care... I'm just poor lol. I work so I don't know if I have time to do like... full blown paintings for all of them or anything. Any creative suggestions?? Thanks...

You could make cute christmas cards from scratch, make your own paper, and your own crayons, yada yada yada & color pretty pictures. Baskets of desserts would be extra delightful. Picture frames are a beautiful way to remember an old memory. PLEASE, stop at the dollar store for stocking stuffers, those are easy objects to find. You could buy a dinner gift card per family, instead of one for each member, this might save on money. Orrrrr, & I'm just throwing this out there, you could go clean their house, i mean instead of them doing it or buying some shady asss maid. Hey, so I hope you find your way through this Christmas, and if you do not, just remember, Santa's got yo baaack. MERRRRY XMAS, FELIZ NAVIDAD. Peeacee.

Your family would probably love getting some stuff that is made, as long as you put thought into it. Go down to a family-run business downtown (instead of some box-store) and spend $20 on each person, getting them something unique. Its better than 20 $1 gifts, trying to masquerade as a lot of stuff. Use your artistic abilities to wrap the presents really, really nice. For $100, you can buy 4 $20 gifts and wrapping paper, and still have change left over. Or consider giving money to a charity in their names.

What's your budget like? Look, your family (sisters & mom) are not going to care what you give them as long as it comes from the heart. Maybe put together some scrap books or pictures of your family or make them like a painting or something. Something not too big or expensive that shows that you care enough to stress out about it. I hope you find something, and I hope this helps. Good luck & happy Christmas! :)

Me

Next year do Christmas planning and shopping earlier. :) I have gotten some very nice yet inexpensive gifts from people, including a very pretty picture frame that I now have on my night stand and a really neat primitive-style Santa - both from a dollar store. Most people have plenty of "stuff". We are "drowning in disposable distractions". Does someone play Facebook games? You can actually buy a gift card at Wal-Mart for Facebook Credits. Someone else have an MP3 player? There's a gift card for that too. Especially if you have older people in your life - grandparents - instead of giving them STUFF why not give them an especially nice picture of you? For $6 I got four 5x7s and six wallet size pictures of my kids and that's what I gave to people for Christmas. Something else I've done is to spend some time in the kitchen baking goodies. I gave my best friend a box of gluten free brownie mix because she has Celiac and won't spend the money on gluten free treats (they are about 2x more expensive than regular). If you think about the people in your life and what they like, you will be able to find inexpensive things. Spending more money doesn't (or shouldn't) mean you love someone more or less. Take some time and you'll figure it out. :)
