-
I live in new jersey. I want to become a state trooper. I am going to finish college with degree in criminal justice( but i can still double major if someother major would help also). I have clear record, but i did get some dteentions in high school and i did smoke pot a few times but a long time ago. what are my chances of becoming a state trooper? Are there any tips you can give me for the process of becoming one? Thank you :)

Answer:
be honest about everything. the only guaranteed disqualifier is a lie. that being said, rethink the CJ degree....unless there are other areas of the law profession you would look for a job in, it is a useless degree. a CJ degree WILL NOT help you get a job in law enforcement any more than any other degree will. they only care about the # of credits, not where they're from. my sincere suggestion, is to get a degree in a useful field and take electives in criminal law and constitutional law. if you get in an academy, you will be taught those courses. If you have already learned the material you'll have an easier time.

You may be okay, most of the time as long as you haven't used in the past so many years and it wasn't continued use etc. it is not a hinderance to being a police officer. You could also look into atleast getting a minor in psychology, sociology or some other closely related subject area to assist in being above and beyond the average college person just in a hurry to get that piece of paper- if you can double major all the better. Start getting in shape now. Monday Wednesday and Friday run five miles, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday weightlift or do calesthenic exercises- Giver your body one day a week to recuperate. Being physically fit is a big factor in being a police officer and especially a trooper. when they start asking you those question make sure that you tell them everything. because when they do that background check on you and find out that you lied. your chances just went out the window.
