Cannot access hotmail's emails?

Can the police trace threatening and harassing emails via remote access?

  • Ok, try and stay with me on this, as its confusing the **** out of me.... 2 friends of mine, a newly engaged couple, lets call them Mr A& Ms B. They have been getting threatening and nasty emails & txt msgs sent via a free sms website. It's been going on nearly a year now. The problem with these msgs were that they were anonymous, but being made to look like they were one of the people in our close friends circle, including myself, my sisters, and 2 of my best friends. Each msg would hint it was someone else. As you can imagine the months went by and the things that were being said got progressively worse. We tried to convince Mr A & Ms B to take the laptop to the police and have the msgs traced but they always had a reason not to, for example Ms B had accidentally deleted the emails during a month she thought it had stopped or the police aren't interested in a civil matters such as this. Then, after Mr A had had enough of it, they decided they needed to find out who it was. Ms B said that she had a friend who'd be able to recover the deleted emails, trace the sender of the emails IP address and get a location down to the exact address where the computer of the sender is and the name that the computer is registered in. But the catch was the man who could do this lived 500 miles away, so he did all this via remote access, and as this method of investigation was illegal, Mr A & Ms B couldn't then go to the police regarding the harassment. Now, I haven't SEEN any evidence, but as Mr A & Ms B are 2 of my best friends I took their word for it when they told me that it was 2 of my other best friends sending the msgs. This has caused a stupid amount of problems as the 2 friends that have been accused, lets say they are called Mr C and Ms D, have remained adamant that they are innocent even to this day, 6 months later. Now, the msgs have continued, and Mr C & Mrs D have been stricken from out circle of friends and today, some stuff has happened and come to light that has made me think something untoward is going on here. So, my question is, IS IT POSSIBLE FOR ANYONE TO REMOTE ACCESS A LAPTOP, RECOVER A DELETED HOTMAIL ACCOUNT, RECOVER DELETED EMAILS AND THEN TRACE THE IP BACK TO THE HOUSE ADDRESS AND COMPUTER NAME ALL IN A MATTER OF A COUPLE OF HOURS?

  • Answer:

You won't get a computer name, you will get the IP address that locates a computer's physical location and origin of these messages. If it comes from a web cafe, that cafe can be alerted by local authorities about this event and ( generally) monitor the activities in their premises. The manager can alert local police if someone is using their machines for ill intent, and an arrest is possible. Deleted emails can be retrieved from the server, or the hard drive if it isn't cleaned entirely. Police computer experts can also extricate all materials stored on that hard drive ( locally, child porn has been found on discarded computers and in home raids). Removing the RAM backup battery does nothing to the hard drive. Questions: Is Ms. D also Mrs. D? How do you know the offender is male? Scary as this sounds, with so much wireless access out there, Wi-fi hotspots are prime targets for hackers. As for recovering deleted accounts, there are secure safeguards in place to ensure only the account holder can access that data.

Most Police departments have computer crime divisions, They can investigate and may be able to determine who is sending the messages. A police report needs to be made.

i can do it in about ten minutes all together. and i am not even a computer geek. but remember, that still don't mean they are guilty because i can also hack into your email account and send messages from your computer so that if someone traces it they will come back to your isp address. you can trace my isp address right now and it will take you to an actual address that is about twenty miles from where i really am. a lot of things can be done with computers to hide who you are or wheren you are.
