What is it like being a Police Officer?

  • Im 14 and i was thinking of becoming a police officer when i grow up....what is it like and what would i have to go thru to become one? i would like if only current police officer or retired officers or if your training to be one then please answer.

  • Answer:

There are many different routes to becoming an officer-you can't hurt your chances by first attending college (if you have aspirations of joining the FBI after being a police officer you need a four year degree), many depts hire without a degree. Some depts will pay to send you through their academy, some require you to attend an academy at your own expense with no guarantee of hire. The most important thing is to keep out of trouble and stay in shape-it will increase your chances of getting hired significantly. The best component of police work, in my estimation, is that it always changes. The worst part is that you often, though not always, deal with the scum of the earth and it can jade you if you're not a strong willed person. Good Luck, I hope this helps.

its pretty cool. depending on what u like to do. usually you have to have at least 2 years of college or military service. although some departments (usually smaller ones) allow u to apply with just high school. if u apply to a large city dept., u can usually transfer to many different units. so if u like animals, u can be a canine officer, if u like boats, u can join the marine unit, or swat, or detective after a few years on patrol. hopes this helps..good luck
