How old do you have to be to become a security guard?

I want to become a Security Guard?

  • I'm currently looking for a job at the age of 18. I've been going to a program called "Explorer's" in which you learn about law enforcement and other things. Once you've completed the primary lessons and learn CPR you may ride with the police. I only have to learn CPR and I am currently enrolled in college for 4 years of Criminal Law and Justice. I'll be starting in late September and I have always been interested in Law Enforcement as a child. With college coming up and in search of a job I was wondering if their was a way to get into the Security Guard department. I am athletic and quick on my feet, I have a sharp mind, good observation skills for what I currently know, competitive (love a challenge), and very good communicating with others. I make friends easily because of this and I can lighten a mood fairly quick if needed. I also took a 1 day class in self defense and have used it before, so I do know it works. I know I may have to get a license and it doesn't bother me, and I can only be unarmed security also which doesn't bother me either. Though I don't know where to really start, and I live in Bristol, TN. Anyone have any ideas on where I could start?

Mall cop! Nah seriously, go to your local mall and they'd probably be glad to hire you, if your up for it I guess just check around your area for wanted security guards, and yeah, campus security would be a good start. Your probably likely to get a job there anyway since you know the place from attending there. Good luck

You might check with your campus' security detail and see if they have any jobs for students. That would be a step up from security guard and look better on your resume. .

You sound like a perfect candidate for a security guard job. Getting started is pretty easy. To start you need to find a few private security companies in your area. This can be done by referring to your local yellow pages or by looking online. Simply type in private security companies in Bristol, TN. Call a few security guard companies and ask if it is required that you have a guard card before you apply. Some companies will hire you then help you to earn your guard card. You will have to get your guard card before you start working so you might as well make it your #1 priority. You can find a guard card company online or you can ask a security company is they are affiliated with a training class. Once you have your guard card you are set for work. The private security company is an easy company to get into and they are always hiring. Good luck!

Actually starting out as a mall security guard is one of the best places to get practical law enforcement experience. Despite what you hear, and what you may have seen in the movies, a mall security guard is a very good stepping stone into law enforcement because of the public contact. To gain a experience for law enforcement, you want to do a job that gets lots of public contact, not a security guard that just sits at a desk in an office building, but one that is out and about interacting with the public routinely on a daily basis. This is what a mall officer does. Not only that, but you will be be on patrol, enforcing mall policies, handling all types of situations from petty theft, fights, to medical calls. All which you will deal with as a cop. Basically the mall is like a small town. Then you also get to build a good relationship with the local law enforcement department. Don't listen to any of the non sense you hear about mall cops. It is what you make of it and given your background, it sounds like you will make it as a cop and security experiecen will definately be good for you. In fact, doing that is kinda like testing the waters to make sure you actually like that line of work. I would recommend you get licensed by attending a local training academy and then submiting your application and fingerprints to the state. Then go to any local shopping area and apply for a job there. Trust me, its the best place to start.
