How do I get the title to my car?

My car has a lien holder who has disappeared. How do I get my title or get rid of the car?

  • back in 2008 we bought a car from a little independent car sale place in Washington state. I paid the car off and the dealer was supposed to send the title but the car broke down and we got last minute orders to move from the military. So we left the car with a friend who was going to buy it from us and fix it up. We did not get the title. The proof of payment was lost in the move and the deal disappeared. There have been no communications about the car from the dealer. The DMV will not give me a title without proof of paid in full or without the dealer releasing the title and i cant get in touch with the dealer. The car is not in my possession since we had to move and it was disabled. Is there anyway my friend who is holding the car can get rid of it or get a proof of ownership?

  • Answer:

You can sue the dealer for the amount you paid for the car. That will get them off their butts. They'd rather just sign off the lien. However, since you have no proof of payment, they could call your bluff and you would be screwed. Try it. I don't think you have very many other options. Losing documentation of a major purchase like a car, with a loan and the need for formal title papers, is a big SNAFU. I hope you learned something from this. I really don't understand why you can't get in touch with the dealer? If they went out of business, their lien may be voidable. And THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! Go USA.

The DMV is not telling you the whole story....... YES there is a way ....all you do is file for a new title for an abandoned vehicle. Go to the DMV and ask for the application.....don't bother to explain it to them unless they ask ....(which they won't)... you have to understand the mentality of these DMV workers.....most of them are uneducated, liberal, government working dead weight. Most have bad attitudes from waiting on people who do not follow rules well and because they have very strict rules they must follow. It makes for a bad trip every time we go to the DMV Anyway, I got sidetracked..... yeah just submit the completed application along with $5 fee (i think) and wait about a week or two....and if anything is wrong or missing data, they will let you know. Good Luck.

Go to court, and sue the dealershp.
