My fiance will soon be a police officer, and I'm worried. Any advice?

We live in Ontario. I'm scared it'll ruin our marriage, that he'll see horrible things, and that he'll be depressed because of it. Statistically speaking, divorce, depression, & suicide rates are higher among police officers. He could also die. Despite my concerns, I don't want to ask him to change careers. Becoming a police officer is something that he really wants, & has for almost our entire relationship. Only now that he is more focused on this goal, and that it seems to be more of a reality am I starting to worry. I know that he will experience little to no trouble becoming a cop - he's sociable, intelligent, educated, young, fit, & an overall great guy. My primary concern is that our marriage won't last. That sounds selfish in comparison to the many other things that could happen - he could be killed, be depressed, witness horrible things - don't get me wrong, all of those things come in at an incredibly close second. He's the most important thing in my life, and the thought of losing him in any sense scares me beyond anything I can convey. Here are a few facts I’ve picked up: → 70% to 80% of police officers will go through a divorce → Children of divorced parents are less likely to have successful marriages → Children of police officers are also less likely to have successful marriages. Both our fathers were police officers, and divorced. That leaves very little room in those statistics for us to have a lasting marriage. I guess I’m worried about what the future holds, especially when it comes to his career. I would appreciate any relevant advice to do with policing, marriage, and what I should expect as a soon to be wife of a cop, and how to help him deal with anything he encounters. If there are any things I can do to help our relationship, let me know. Thanks for your time. Any advice will be appreciated. We also agree that we don’t want kids. I’m not sure whether or not that’s relevant.

Where are you getting those statistics? I dont think 70+ percent of cops get divorced. I highly suggest you try to get him to work as a police officer in a SMALL town. Then he will see less violence and bad things. I have know many cops whom are married and still married to their first wives. Small town cops seem to be happier than big city cops. I am surprised neither of you want any kids. Eventually one of you might change your mind about having kids and that would cause a divorce, not him being a cop. The key to staying in your marriage is to get marriage counseling OR make sure he gets counseling through his department if something very disturbed happens in the course of his job. Counseling can help resolve any emotional problems he may have as a result of his job. Just be supportive and don't assume the worst! Usually police stick together and you become kind of like a family with the other cops in his department and the other wives/husbands of the cops.

Well you might as well just leave him now with that attitude. Instead of moping about all the depressing fictional facts, support him.

Tell him to get a desk job. Administration, human resources, etc. Or, you are faced with these statistics. Cops average a 5 year shorter life span than with most jobs.( Five Or Ten years--saw it somewhere).
