It is difficult now a days or almost nonexistent.Concerned Govt authorities do not like private persons to poke their noses into such affairs or related items i.e biopsy, inquest, fingerprints are difficult to handle.

First off there are over 60,000 of us in the country. Its not that hard. You will need to check with your state. 46 states have licensing requirements. I own my own firm so I had to pay licensing fees in addition to business fees. You will need to have some sort of experience depending on what you want to investigate. Get your education based on that. I do workers comp and domestic investigations primarily but I also do more types of cases. If you have no experience take college courses. Do not waste your money on study at home programs - most of them don't hold up and are fraudulent. Regardless of what you want to investigate you will need to learn state laws and federal laws including fair credit reporting act, grahmm-leech-bliley act, federal privacy act and federal wiretapping act. We are given a lot of authority and trust, if you don't know what your doing it can bite you in the ***.
