Every department has different standards and hiring processes. Do a little research with the departments you are interested in. I'm sure Chicago P.D. has a recruiting website that will have all the info you want specific to their department. I'm at another midwest department, and I make in the area of 40k a year. You'll never get rich in Law Enforcement, but you can be comfortable...

Citicop hit it right on the nose.Different departments,different standards.You have to be in good shape,and have a lot of patience.It is a pretty stressful job,more stress at times.Even though it can be stressful,I still love the job and don't regret becoming a police officer. I also work for a police department in the Midwest,and new officers on their probationary period start off at 34k.Captains make 53k/year.So you can make anywhere between 34k and 53k.Larger departments like Chicago probably start off somewhere around 40k/year.
