What happens if you are 18 and get caught driving with just a permit?

  • I am 18 and a senior in high school and I still haven't gotten around to going back to the DMV to get my full license. I have a car so I obviously drive it knowing that I could get in trouble if i'm caught without a license driver in the passenger seat.What I don't know are the actual consequences I could face. Will my car get impounded? Will I get a ticket? arrested? Warning? Please answer Because I usually don't worry about it but I'm parnoid tonight because it's friday the 13th and I sure don't want to stay in the house all night but I'm afraid if I do go out tonight for sure I'm going to get pulled over. lol at my superstition please help p.s. I live in Louisiana if its based on particular state.

    In California, you would be cited or arrested for driving without a valid license and your car would be towed.

Well, you could get your license suspended until you are 21. Your car would most likely get impounded.

Call your local DMV, Secretary of State, or whoever issues driver's licenses in Louisiana and get the straight answer. Someone here might tell you anything from "you'll get just a warning" to "You'll have to join the French Foreign Legion to get out of this", and you won't know which answer is true or not. One thing extra that you might not hear from the DMV - if you get caught driving without a license, the cost to insure you might take a big jump. Have you got an extra $1000/year to pay that? And why not just go get your full license? Almost every high school kid I know COULDN'T WAIT to get that license.

You'll have to look up your local laws. If I were you, right after school on Monday I'd be getting my license.
