What is it like to be a police officer?

  • Or any member of the police force (lutenant, commanding officer blah blah blah).... Is it exciting? Is there a lot of paper work? What is vice like? Is it stressful? What is the average annual income? As much info as you can give me please

Yeah because I'm definitely a pompous douche.... Anyway... to answer your question! It's a great job, so fulfilling and rewarding! If you go into a job like this, with the right set of mind, it can be great. It's active, every day is different, you get to meet all kinds of people, good and bad... You can put people in jail for breaking the law!!!! Vice is pretty interesting... you gotta have some good acting skills! I suck at it... I can't put on stilettos and pretend I'm something that I'm not.... but it's still fun!! So there you have it! =) Edit- Like someone said, it all depends on what city you work at. I work in Los Angeles so I get to see.... ask anything and I've seen it. We get violent call after call after call, arrests almost daily, and we also get a lot of calls where putting someone in jail, doesn't even feel like enough. Every time I hear a child abuse call come out on the radio, my heart stops. The paperwork sucks, you get 10 minutes of fun out on the field, and at least 2 to 4 hours of paperwork depending on what it is you are doing. The income also depends on where you work. LAPD gets paid a very decent amount, but we also live in California which is freakishly expensive. I'm sure if you go to that Missouri department that other person mentioned, they get paid half and still have a very comfortable living. The Champ- Well.... let's see. For example, a radio call of an open door or a burglary in progress. You do a building search and you find the burglar hiding in the closet. Doing building searches can be pretty fun (they are always different, there is always a possibility of finding someone and it is so rewarding when you do because the innocent people who were at work trying to make a living, were about to get robbed of not only their most precious possessions, but also their privacy). Now you have not only to do all the paperwork for booking the suspect who is now in custody, but you also have to write a report, all the documents that go with it, get it approved by your Watch Commander... all that fun stuff Or a domestic violence radio call, to me, it is very rewarding putting someone in jail for it because nobody should be forced to live with a violent person. It makes the paperwork well worth it.

They feel superior to all levels of life, including Doctors, Firefighters, brain surgeons, nuns, etc. In reality they are lower than dirt.

@ Suzie Q Can you detail the "10mins of fun in the field"?

To tell you the truth every question that you asked above depends on which city or town you are a cop in. If you are a cop in a small town in Missouri then yes it will probably be pretty boring. However if your a cop in New York City then it's going to be A LOT more exciting. My close friend was a cop in NYC (NYPD) for I think 21 years. He would have on average at least one violent crime to respond to a day. He would make around 30 arrests a month (sometimes more). But for every arrest there is some paper work but not too much. And if your in a big city like New York than yes it is very stressful, a lot of cops have problems with alcohol because of their stress. The new starting salary for NYPD is around $48,000 a year, not too bad. Overall being a cop in a city is an exciting job, and when people say being a cop is never exciting think about it would you rather go out into the streets, or sit in your cubical from 9 to 5.
