Complicated speeding ticket/background check question?
-
Once upon a time in a little podunk town in Texas I got a speeding ticket. I didn't pay it (because I couldn't afford to) and I received a letter saying that I would not be able to renew my license. My license hasn't expired so I haven't needed to renew and I didn't receive a letter saying a warrant was out for my arrest. Does anyone know if that warning implies that a warrant IS out for my arrest or if it implies that my license is already invalid? And furthermore, if I apply for a criminal background check would any and/or all of those things show up? I wouldn't even worry about the background check except I am applying to the state of Texas for a in-home child care license (you know, so maybe I can make enough extra cash to pay the ticket) and I worry about it coming back to haunt me. Thanks in advance.

Answer:
The fines, late fees and penalties just get harder to pay the longer you wait. Your fine is bigger now than it would have been if it had been paid on time. It will show up in a background check, and I'd check the status of your license ... it might already be suspended! That might be a barrier to being approved for a child care license. I'd contact the clerk of courts where you got the ticket and see how much the original fine has grown,.

I used to be a police officer in one of those little podunk Texas towns. I can tell you for a fact that since you didn't pay the ticket, a warrant for FTA (Fail to Appear) was issued. They won't extradite, though. But...when the time comes to renew your license, it won't be renewed until this little matter is cleared up. I can also tell you that if you get stopped for *anything*, and a DL check is run, you'll be taken in. You can either sit it out in jail (50 bucks a day used to be the norm), or make arrangements to pay the court of jurisdiction. The State of Texas doesn't forget these kinda things, honey. Oh, almost forgot...it *will* show up on a background check.
You Make My Brain Hurt
I'd hire a lawyer, and see what he says. He'll take payments and maybe you can keep your license since you'll need it for child care business.
