What do you think about security guards being called officers?

  • I received a call and the guy addressed himself as an officer, he just had some questions about his junior officer's conduct at the scene of the crime. My car got broken into and the cops came out, my community security guard also came out as well and put the flashers on on his vehicle (dont know why since the cops already had theirs on). Anyway during the convo I simply told the the officer that his junior officer was really helpful and responded quickly, also stated that he was courteous and made me feel at ease. At the end of the convo the officer stated "well thats what we are here for sir, Gardus Security puts people first" Then I thought to myself "wait...wtf? I was speaking to a security guard all along when I thought he was actually a police officer calling about his junior police officer". So after I decided to go online to check out security job listings to actually see what title they go under now, and guess what? They are actually called officers now and not security guards. One job listing said 'Want to be called an officer and not a security guard? then come join our team'. What do you all think about this new transition? I have respect for security but to me that title is misleading. Its like a cop calling himself a peace keeper, totally misleading

  • Answer:

I don't care as long as they don't think of themselves as officers and getting in my way on a crime scene.

The title of security guard and security officer is interchangeable. Companies used a variety of titles like guards, officers, patrolman, and specialist. And of course, once they obtain supervisory ranks, they are referred to as Sergeant, Liuetenant, Captain, and even Chief. Regardless of their titels, the shift from guards to officer is from recent years to make the job more professional. Similiarly just like other titles like policeman or fireman to police officer and stewardess topolice officer and flight attendant to remove gender descriptions. Prisons guards are now called correctional officers as well. the title officer represents a more professional and rounded individual. Their job is not simply to "guard" a facility but they are there to provide customer service, respond to all types of emergencies, provide medical aid, do patrols, and enforce policy. A guard is someone that simply stands at a door the whole time, but the role of security officers has changed in the last few decades to represent a more diverse role. Its not unusual for security companies to call their employees officers and they even answer phones and introduce themselves as officer so and so as well. I think its a good tranisition because it professionalizes the position. I am aware it can be misleading at times, but as long as they don't try to impersonate themselves as police officers then then its a good thing.
