What is going to happen to me?

I got caught shoplifting a few days ago, and I don't know what's going to happen now?

  • It was under 100 dollars, and they were really unclear on what was going to happen. I'm only 17 by the way, and I'm from Oregon. He was clear on the fact that I was just a minor so it would only be on my record until I'm 18. A guy who was an undercover loss prevention agent caught me and took me into a back room, and he had me sign a paper saying I understood what MIGHT happen to me. He also asked for my ID, which I didn't have with me, and my mailing address and my parent's names. So after that he called the cops, and the cop that came was my friend's dad so he was much friendlier than the agent. But the agent said I could have a court date and really big fines and all that, that I would get a letter in the mail and that he'd call my parents, and that I was banned from the store. The cop didn't say any of that. He just asked me to show him my ID and then he told me to go home and take a deep breath. I'm not going to make excuses for me stealing because I realize it was bad and I'm definitely not doing it again. I'm just confused as to what's going to happen. It's been a few days and I've gotten no phone calls, no letters, nothing. My parents don't know yet so I'm wondering if anything is EVER going to happen? Also, I live in a small town and that store is the only store in town for things like groceries, and my mom keeps bugging me to go get stuff for her. I'm scared to go back, so I'm not sure what to do. If anyone could help me that'd be great.

  • Answer:

Well if you are banned don't go back they will have your pic up and can have you arrested. If the cop didn't do anything, I honestly don't think that anything will happen. You would have to have been booked and a date would have been set with the courts. I think that since the cop knows you he didn't do anything. Just remember that the undercover person at the store is just security and don't have any way legally to have you charges without the police. They would have done that at the time of the theft. I would stress to you to take this as a learning experience and to never do it again. Also, if you are still afraid of what could happen to you, I would talk to your friends dad since he would be the arresting police officer. Bit sounds like he didn't do anything other than give you a so called warning.
