How would you report threats to the police?

Can a police report be filed after a verbal altercation in a parking lot?

  • My son is disabled and we have a disabled parking permit for when we are with him. I was at the mall today waiting for a disabled spot, am Suv was pulling out, I was behind the SUV and someone sped by the other side and took the space. Needless to say I was very upset. I got out of the car and yelled that was my space, then another called pulled out and I got that space, I yelled at the woman that stole the space " You are digusting and rude!" She called me an a##hole and fliped me the bird. Then she said "You are not even disabled!" I got even more upset and pointed out my son and said " He has been disabled since he was born, not just because he is old" She was with her elderly mother. She proceeded to say "It's not my problem your kid's a retard!" I flipped and called her ever name in the book, and waved my arms around even my wife who is very calm and mild mannered called her a *****!" The lady said "If you touch me... I just stared I did not touch or had no intention of touching anyone. My wife said Lady no one is touching you!" Then I was like forget it and just wanted to go get my stuff in the store and leave She wrote down my tag number so I took a photo of hers, I said lady call the police then I'll wait, she got nervous then and said I dont want to call the police and said I should apologize for yelling. I said you need to apologize for stealing the space and calling my kid a retard. I said I just want to forget it and move on. She snidely said sorry I said me too and that was it. BTW no threats were made by either side. My question is can she file a report or should I? I am not one to get into these kinds of arguements with people, and I do think she was wrong for stealing the space and referring to my child in a derogatory way, i do wish i had not reacted that way in front of the kids. So should i call the police or can she? What if anything can she do with my tag number. I left the store and she was still there I did not touch her car. I never threatened her or she me but she did refer to my disabled child using a slur. Thanks in advance for the help.

  • Answer:

Both of you could file a complaint, but hopefully you will both just let it go. If she files against you, you will need to go to court, but it would most likely get dismissed. My husband and a hunter near our property got into a verbal altercation because we felt he was hunting too close to our horse pasture. My husband took out the dog and played catch with a squeaky ball to frighten away any deer he might shoot at. The hunter got angry and approached my husband. A friend and I went over to back up my husband. There was a lot of yelling and the hunter threatened to shoot our dog who was running around and barking from the excitement, so my husband said he could shoot him if he did. Then he walked away. We got a call the next night from a state trooper that the hunter filed a complaint against my husband, The charge was disorderly conduct and making too much noise. We actually had to go to court to defend our right to play with a dog and make noise on our property on a Saturday afternoon. The case was dismissed after we went through all the testimony.
