Opportunities in Criminal Justice field without becoming an officer nor an attorney/paralegal?
-
I've been taking classes for A.S. in criminal justice technology and it's all VERY interesting and most importantly, I understand it all. It's pretty much the major that won't put me to sleep. However, I realize all of this information may be useless and a waist of money because I DO NOT want to be a patrol/police officer nor do I want to be an attorney/paralegal. From what I have researched you have to be an officer or have military experience prior to becoming DEA, FBI, CIA, U.S. Marshall; so all of those are out of the question. What careers are out there in the criminal justice field for one's that do not want to be a cop or attorney?

Answer:
Your degree is a good start. You could be an evidence custodian, a meter person, a ticket written, a dog catcher, an animal rights person, etc… You could be a dispatcher or a TSA person. You could take more classes and learn to work in the crime lab and become an expert witness in court. You could work as an adult or juvenile probation officer or a correctional officer. You could also be an investigator for an attorney. You could become a private investigator. You could also be a bail bondsmen. I think you can work for the FBI and customers without military. They like military people, but that is not a reason not to except you. Remember, what they are looking for when they hire a military person: dependable, follows instructions, work record, etc… That's what you need to have. You just need to find it somewhere they see an equally acceptable. If all fails, be a teacher.

Go to http://data.bls.gov/search/query/results?q=%22criminal%20justice%22 and read through some of the job descriptions offered by the US Department of Labor (Bureau of Labor Statistics). They range from social services to probation officers, and from teaching criminal justice to tax collecting - and many others. Good luck with it!
Police/military experience is not required for those agencies, those a lot of the work you would do would be the same as a police officer. Dispatch, forensic tech, or correctional staff jobs could be options if you want something different. Or you can get your degree in that field and do something compleatly different. You do not have to go into that field just because your degree is in it.
many of the job that are available to a criminal justice degree pay well. Being a cop is the best option for most people because of the salary and benefit. However if you don't like it here are the other choice loss prevention investigator (kind of like insurance adjuster) crim analyst corrections officer probation officer security supervisor
