What is a petty theft?

What are possible sentences for 1st time offense petty theft?

  • My friend & I went to WalMart; she decided she wanted to steal some things, but I didn't want to. I was stupid enough not to say anything, and let her do it... I had some things in the cart that I was planning on purchasing, but when she went the the Domestic dpt. to put her stuff in her bag, she put my stuff in too! I figured that if we got caught, the security cameras would see me taking my stuff out and still charge me if we got caught, so I just left it. We walked to the exit and the security guard asked us to come to the room... Long story short, on the booking report I was listed as the "co-def," even though I didn't even touch the bag or put things in it. The cops wrote that we both selected the items to steal (NOT true- I had no intentions on stealing) and on the top where it lists what kind of crime it was, it said "Misdemeanor/Petty Theft". They took her fingerprints and not mine, and we both got different court dates. This is my first offense EVER (Not even a traffic citation or violation) and I'm wondering is there any way I could just get a bunch of fines and community service? I don't want probation because I'm sure they'll contact my job and I want to keep this quiet... Does anybody know what could happen to me?

    the time for keeping this quiet has come and gone. you will probably get probation and community service as well as a fine and fees. you could ask the court to give you jail time instead of probation...

A few months ago I decided to steal a headband, which wasnt a good choice. I was 18 and the time so I was an adult, so they didnt call my parents. It was my first offence, previous to that I have never got in trouble with the law. They took me to the little room and took my picture and stuff. It is on my record as a warning, but if anybody wants a police check (like for a job) it won't show up, but If I do it again, it will become more serious. I got a fine for $500 (all for a $14 headband). I'm banned from the mall and the store (and any other stores owned by the company) for a year. Did they mention fines at all? Good luck, we all make mistakes. Btw I'm from Canada.

Talk to your friend and tell her to take the entire wrap. It all comes down to whether or not you plan on doing something with your life, like going to college, etc. If you do then the best option is to plead not guilty at your court date and try talking to your buddy about taking the entire blame so it makes the case on you easier. However if she disagrees with that and wants to be a thorn in your butt then you can take another approach and still plead "not guilty" at your arraignment.

OK...If you are with someone and they commit a crime you will go down too. First time will be a fine of 500 dollars and two days in jail. You will be on probation for three years. (OH...jail most likely be suspended due to first time.) It will be on your record. (Good luck on getting a good job. You now have a police record)
