What is actually a hiccup?

What happens anatomically when a hiccup HURTS?

  • I know a hiccup is caused by a spasm of the diaphragm, but what happens anatomically that is different from a normal hiccup when you have one that hurts? I've had owie hiccups before but tonight I had one that hurt SO bad, I had to stop what I was doing. It hurt along my spine in the back of my lungs on one side, and in the front of my chest and in my throat!

  • Answer:

I would assume that it was musculoskeletory. Basically you kind of pulled a bunch of muscles when you hiccuped. Were you inactive for a little bit before you hiccuped? Muscles can get "cold". Kinda why you're suppose to stretch and warm up before a workout. Not exactly the same pain but its the same principle. But if it felt deeper in your back then look up bulging disc and talk to your doctor. Not to say hiccuping will hurt ya. But if you had a tiny warning then it may be tim to squeeze in some core workouts and strengthen up before something real bad happens.
